Recollection of motherEnquire

I think of my mother.
She used to compare the Australian gum trees around us to the Korean pine trees and say how ugly the gum trees looked. But as time passed, she grew fond of the gums and said there was something about them that reminded her of the Korean pine trees.
My mother is no longer here. But every time I see an ‘ugly’ gum, it reminds me of my mother and the Korean pines and I want to paint them using a traditional method used in painting Korean pine trees. The long white grey trunks of gums turns into a vibrant red.
Then I am mesmerized.

어머니는 우리 주변에 흔한 검트리가 참 못생겼다며 한국의 소나무와 비교하셨다. 그러나 어머니는 시간이 갈수록 호주의 검트리가 한국의 소나무 같다며 좋아하셨다. 이제 어머니는 없는데 나는 어딜가든 그 못난 검트리가 정다운 소나무처럼 나를 감싸고 있음을 느낀다.
어느날 문득 호주의 검트리를 한국의 소나무처럼 그리고 싶어졌다.
밝고 단순하고 깊은..
그리고 나는 내가 무엇을 하는지에 빠져든다.
